French company Unistellar was one of the first companies to design a smart telescope with the launch of the eVscope in 2020. An upgraded version – eVscope 2 – remains its flagship product, though it also produces a more affordable version that doesn’t come with a Nikon eyepiece, the eVscope eQuinox. These two cutting-edge products comprise its ‘Expert’ range of smart telescopes and have, as of 2024, sold 10,000 units.

New for January 2024 is its ‘Discovery’ range, which comprises the Odyssey and Odyssey Pro, which are smaller and more affordable. Only the latter includes a Nikon eyepiece. Each one features a new planetary mode, so it can image planets, the moon, and the sun, as well as distant galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.

What really makes the Unistellar products stand out is a citizen science dimension, which makes it possible to join in with scientific observing campaigns of asteroids, comets, and even exoplanet detection. This is cutting-edge amateur astronomy!
